The Danish Family Farms

Focus on animal welfare

At The Danish Family Farms, we have an ambitious goal to make it easy to choose better animal welfare. At our family farms, we take good care of each other - and not least of our chickens. We work together to improve animal welfare so that the chickens get to be chickens. It takes a little more effort in everyday life - but that doesn't matter as long as you're working for a good cause. For us, it's important that every single chicken is raised with care. And we hope that Danes will help support this.

- All our chickens are 100% Danish.

- All our chickens are either 2- or 3-hearted.

- All our chickens are slow-growing breeds with natural growth.

- All our chickens have free access to water and roughage.

- All our chickens are free to roam.

- All our chickens have access to toys/activity materials.

- All our free-range and organic chickens have access to nature all year round.

- All our organic chickens are fed organic roughage.

- All our farm chickens are raised without antibiotics*.

Focus on our climate footprint

In addition to our strong focus on animal welfare, De Danske Familiegårde is also on a journey to reduce our climate footprint. De Danske Familiegårde, which is a brand under Danpo, has therefore e.g:

- Reduced the consumption of natural gas by 4% per kg chicken from 2020 to 2021.

- Reduced electricity consumption by 15% per kg chicken from 2020 to 2021.

- Heating most of our chicken houses at our farmers with biofuel made from straw, wood chips and wood pellets etc.

- Continuous focus on appropriate pack sizes and product shelf life.

- Make sure to use the whole chicken. In Denmark, we love chicken breasts and thighs, while feet and wings are "hot bread" in Asia. In fact, there is nothing on the chicken that is not used.

- Changed the packaging so that 99% of our chicken is packed in recyclable plastic trays.

We are proud of the results we have achieved so far, but we are also very aware that the journey continues.

*Not treated with prescription antibiotics. A feed additive (coccidiostats) is used to avoid intestinal problems in the chicken caused by parasites.
