A major project utilizing surplus heat from Danpo’s factory in Farre has been implemented, enabling Danpo to provide more sustainable district heating to residents in the local community.
After several years of project planning and construction work, the first households in the town of Farre and in Give are now connected to district heating generated from chicken production, replacing previous heating methods such as oil and gas. This is the result of a large-scale collaboration between Danpo and Give District Heating, which captures the excess heat from the factory and uses it to provide a far more sustainable heating solution for the local area. According to officials in Vejle Municipality, annual CO2 emissions will be reduced by 284 metric tons compared to the previous primary heating method—natural gas—used by residents in Farre, and Give Fjernvarme’s wood chip consumption can be reduced by over 50 percent, completely eliminating the need for natural gas.
At Danpo’s plant in Farre, we produce processed and frozen chicken products such as nuggets and hot wings, and the intensive cooling processes involved in freezing generate large amounts of excess heat. Technically speaking, a great deal of energy in the form of heat is removed from the products in our spiral freezer. We used to discharge this energy into the condensate, but now it is instead used to heat homes in Give and the surrounding area via district heating,
Contributing to a Greener Transition
Give District Heating broke ground in Farre last summer to install the piping from Danpo to the district heating plant’s water storage tank, which now supplies the Give area with hot water. The total length of the pipeline network, known as the transmission line, is 3.6 kilometers, and Give District Heating supplies a total of over 2,000 households.
Danpo is proud that all the excess heat generated during the production of our products is now being used for district heating, thereby ensuring a more sustainable form of heating for the local community. In October 2024, the first residents in Farre and Give received heat produced at Danpo. In the town of Farre alone, the potential lies in providing approximately 180 households with access to a heating source that is both cheaper and more sustainable. At the same time, Danpo can save on electricity, water, and chemicals for its cooling towers by transferring the waste heat to the district heating system, so in addition to contributing to a greener transition, the collaboration offers financial benefits for both residents and our company. It’s a win-win all around—for the climate, the local community, and for Danpo.
The project was nominated for MLDK’s annual conference in 2023. Danpo was nominated in the Brand Suppliers’ CSR Award category. Although we didn’t win the award, we were proud of the nomination.
